In 2015, I met Diane de Villiers – a super smart and successful businesswoman with as much drive and passion for her business, that she reminded me of me! Her business – Daily Dish – was ingenious, offering delicious pre-packaged dinner boxes delivered straight to your door. After learning about her pioneering initiative that started in 2013, I knew I wanted to get involved and partner with her and her incredible team – and so that’s exactly what I did!

The reason I did this is because Daily Dish’s offering, just like Fairview, is centred around bringing you only the highest quality, fresh, seasonal, local, and sustainably produced food. If you’re a working mother or convenience junkie looking to find an easy way to put delicious, freshly prepared food on your table every day but simply don’t have the time to head to the grocery shops – then Daily Dish has you covered.

I’ve watched from the sidelines as Daily Dish has risen to success year-on-year, gathering a committed following of regular ‘subscribers’ that love having an answer to the sometimes dreaded question of ‘what’s for dinner?’ every night.

Diane and her team have become experts at selecting suitable recipes from their inventory of 3,500 dishes, matching and pairing them to your weekly box and ensuring that the fresh and dry produce are delivered straight to your door or office in a nifty, refrigerated box that keeps your food cold for up to 24 hours (I’ve tested it – it works!). Another reason I am proud to be collaborating with the Daily Dish team is that they endeavour to continually innovate and accommodate. For example, one can select from 6 different dinner box options depending on your dietary requirements. This includes everything from a Classic Box, to Family, Banting, Vegan, Goodie and Pork-Free Box (ideal for me!).

As Fairview works our way towards being more sustainable, we are able to offer the Daily Dish subscribers our wide variety of artisanal cheeses, olive oil, breads and deli products. Some of Fairview’s experimental wines which are not widely available to the general public will also occasionally be included in the boxes. In the coming months, we will be working with Diane and her team more closely. Okay, yes. So this year we have flipped the theme of our annual Goatshed Dinners on their head, with the introduction of a paired Regional Revival Range wine to each themed event. However, the one evening we would never remove from our calendar is the ever-popular Fairview Shiraz and Free-Range Lamb Shank Evening on the 15th June 2018, which also happens to be the third Goatshed Dinner in our calendar this winter. For family proprietors Charles and Raphael, Back is not only their shared, historic surname but also the name of their newest venture together, a restaurant and deli called Back’s, opening next week, 1st November, along the bustling Main Street of Paarl!

The exciting new bistro-style eatery takes its cues from the art deco French background of Raphael, grounded by a traditional Cape twist from Paarl resident Charles, and is set to become the go-to day spot for locals and winelands visitors alike. Back’s promises to bring a carefully curated selection of options that cater with local flair to all visitors.

Saturday, 14^th October marks National Pinotage Day – a day to celebrate South Africa’s specialty, a crossing of Pinot Noir and Cinsaut. First crossed in 1925 in the gardens of local scientist Abraham Perold, the variety has gone on to be both loved and misunderstood. Perold’s goal was simple – he wanted to create a wine that was as delightful as Pinot Noir but that grew as well as Cinsaut. This was because Pinot Noir is a very temperamental, cool climate grape that’s not always at home in our hot South African soils. His unexpected crossing yielded a very black grape that was high in tannins and mightily bold.

Over the decades, Pinotage has weathered several storms, but despite the lashes of international disregard, our local talented winemakers have been steadfast, refining the variety to elevate its finest qualities. Today, there’s a new wave of Pinotage bounding its way through the winelands – one that highlights the attractive attributes about the wine, such as cranberries, violets and plum aromas with a hints of vanilla. Winter time calls for blankets.
And heaters.
And red wine.
And cheese!

At Fairview, it should come as little surprise that we absolutely love our cheese. And in winter, there are few things better than melted Camembert. Camembert is a milk based, light yellow coloured cheese that is said to have been invented in a Normandy village of the same name in the late 1700s by a French farmer named Marie Harel. At our Fairview Cheese Factory based right opposite the Fairview Tasting Room here in Paarl, we have opted to make three different kinds of Camembert, to make sure everybody’s palates are satisfied.

1) Fairview Ripe & Ready Camembert
Made using Jersey cows’ milk, this cheese has a mild and creamy texture and characteristic savoury flavour. The best part about this cheese is that it is ready to enjoy as soon as you purchase it. So don’t worry if you have left it to the last minute to stock up for your cheeseboard!

2) Traditional Camembert
A traditional recipe is used to produce this Camembert. The firm texture at beginning of shelf life will change to a soft and bulging texture towards end of shelf life. The flavour intensifies with age to a characteristic earthy, mushroom aroma.

3) Roydon Camembert
Our Fairview’s flagship cheese, Roydon Camembert is crafted using a secret, traditional recipe and is named in honour of one of our earlier cheesemakers. It is produced in the traditional French method, with a dash of our goats’ milk to give farmhouse flavour and characteristics.

If you’re going to have some guests around for wine, we recommend whipping one of our favourite recipes below up as a quick crowd-pleaser. Absolutely delicious, and made best with our Roydon Camembert.

PS. You can eat the rind of camembert. It’s good for you! Made from penicillium candidum, the white moldy rind is perfectly edible, and plays a key role in the aging process that produces the cheese’s ooey gooey delicious insides.

The olive oil project started out of a desire to be able to provide our farm workers with regular work, not just seasonal jobs over harvest time. Olives come into picking ripeness just as harvest dies down at the end of March, and with this in mind, Charles and the Fairview team set about planting three Italian varieties of Frantoio, Leccino and Coratina olives at the lower end of our Fairview farm.

Harvesting olives is an interesting practice, requiring our pickers to collect the olives by knocking them out of trees onto cloths laid on the ground. Thereafter, you wash the olives and separate them from the leaves, before crushing the olives and seeds into a paste using large rolling stones to extract an oil.

The result so far has been very successful, with our first few olive oil vintages selling out! We are proud to produce an extra-virgin, cold pressed olive oil made 100% from olives grown on our farm. Our restaurant, The Goatshed, embraces a farm to fork philosophy and using our olive oil is just one added step along Fairview’s journey to be a completely sustainable farm.

Perfect as a treat for yourself or for someone special, this beautifully aromatic olive oil leaves a welcome silkiness on the palate and is complimented by herbal, peppery notes. Pure golden goodness!
