With the April school holidays fast approaching, and a string of long weekends in the pipeline, we’re inviting all families to come and enjoy a full-day out at our Fairview farm. If you’d like to enjoy our wine and cheese tasting, then why not let your kids get creative for 90 minutes in one of our Art4Kids classes?

Curated and supervised by Fern, owner of Art4Kids, your children can enjoy a unique experience, aimed at creating an artwork.
There are 3 different options to choose from:

1) CREATE-ON-CANVAS: R100 / 90 mins
Children choose their subject from a book and are guided from start to end.

2) PAINT AN ART BOX: R100 / 90mins
Decorate and stencil onto a wooden box. This can hold a notebook, has a slide lid and can also be used to hold art supplies and stationary. Perfect for a gift!

3) CREATE A SPIN ART CARD: R40 / card
This is a short activity where your child pours paint onto a spinning card and creates a colourful artwork! For spin groups of five, kids can stay for 30 minutes. Don’t forget to ask for your goat stencil!

To avoid disapointment, ensure to book with Fern via SMS or email:

On Friday evening, 20th October, Charles Back was presented with the award for the ‘Western Cape’s Farmer of the Year’ for 2017. Since 1977, Agricultural Writers SA has presented the Farmer of the Year and Agriculturalist of the Year award to various deserving farmers throughout South Africa. The prestigious award is bestowed upon someone who has proved to be a top farmer on various terrains, including the sustainable usage of available land, achieving and increasing biological productivity, social accountability, leveraging the economic viability of the farm, excellent maintenance and the management of natural resources. The award also takes into consideration the winner’s capacity and capability to adjust to changes and stay on top of technological developments. Charles is now a candidate for the National Competition for SA Farmer of the Year, which will take place in Bloemfontein on the 10th November.

Charles has built Fairview from a family farm to a brand internationally known for its wine, cheese and tourism. His series of wines, as well as his cheeses, are awarded the top local and international awards every year. However, what truly distinguishes Charles as a farmer is his personal involvement in all his farming operations, his drive and in particular his capacity to identify new trends before it becomes mainstream. Charles has the ability to farm with innovation – whether it involves sustainable farming management, empowering employees, brand development or ever-growing visitor experiences.

When talking about his farm life, Charles always shares his tales of growing up as a real farm boy, left to his own devices most of the time, which included running around and exploring the farm. Some say nothing has changed. After all, the Back’s have always been farming folk – Charles Back I came from Lithuania with a passion for farming, buying Fairview in 1937. Decades later, Charles Back II jokes saying “farming is part of my DNA”. Since joining his father, Cyril Back, at the Fairview Wine Company in 1978, Charles has set about doing things differently. His first port of call was introducing Mediterranean grapes to the farm, planting the mother blocks of Viognier, Tempranillo and Petite Sirah in the Cape. He also helped introduce and grow Africa’s first goats cheese company, the Fairview Cheese Company, which has gone on to become every bit as successful as the wine side of the business. The cheese factory also happens to be the first first goat milk factory in South Africa, and was recognized by Carbon Protocol of South Africa for being a carbon neutral factory. By owning all his own land and vineyards, Charles oversees every step in the value chain, allowing him to push the boundaries, be innovative, and most importantly, look after his people. He was one of the first producers to make land and company ownership a reality for farm workers.

Well done Charles – your team is proud! Watch our video about Charles Back and his Fairview story below:

This week, on the 2nd October, is World Farm Animal Day! At Fairview, we’re all celebrating, as our farm is always a hub of activity, thanks to our beloved animals that rule the roost, paddocks, barns and towers. We have plenty of fun and quirky critters abound, and one of our favourite stories has to be the tale of Toby the Goat and Inkhuku the Ostrich. Have you heard it?

Baby Toby

From the start, Toby was different. Born 30th June 2014, Tobias do Roam aka Toby came into the world with an immediate identity crisis and unusual brown and black markings, making him stand out from the crowd. So much so that his initial owners mistook him for a little lamb, and sold him onto Fairview’s farm manager, Donald Mouton, who would come to be Toby’s much loved, adopted dad.

Upon arrival at the Fairview barn, Toby was immediately kidnapped, but not the type you’re thinking of. In goat culture, the nanny goats, being particularly maternal, all vied to mother young Toby, and eventually a few lucky nanny’s ‘kidnapped’ the kid goat and raised him to be one of them. Or so they thought …

Toby, without even trying, stands out from the crowd

From the start, Toby showed extreme independence – with a capricious nature in his DNA, unafraid of climbing and always looking for new opportunities, he soon grew out of his sweet kid years and became a somewhat rebellious teen, sneaking out of the barn at night and spending his time with the rabble-rouser Inkhuku the ostrich, a long-standing resident of the farm who shared Toby’s species confusion, as she was raised by chickens. Perhaps bonding over their similarities or simply becoming the best of friends, to this day, you’re likely to spot Toby and Inkhuku roaming the Fairview grassy paths like infantry.

Growing into a charming adult goat, Toby proceeded to jump the barn walls (with complete ease, as the walls are low and goats are built to climb) on a regular basis. His favourite activity was to roam the vineyards, hunting for his favourite thing – perfectly ripe grapes from some of our Mediterranean vines. To the delight and surprise of our winemakers, Toby had a real knack for isolating some of the finest blocks of the vineyards where only the best berries grew, and soon enough, he persuaded a few more goats to roam the farm with him. Toby’s unusual, quirky sense of adventure served as the inspiration for our Goats Do Roam range, which sprouted in 2000, and has come to be the best selling South African wine brand abroad.

Today, Toby enjoys spending his time being official ‘cheese taster’ at the cheese factory and of course, mowing the lawn.
