Grapes were hand picked and sorted into bins. Punched down twice a day during alcoholic fermentaion, left on the skins with gentle wetting of the cap for an extra couple of days. Thereafter it was basket pressed into older barrels for malolactic fermentation, only the free run juice was used. The wine was aged in a barrel before being racked for bottling. Only two barrels were produced.
The colour is intense dark ruby with a brown tinge in the glas. The nose has aromas of cherries, cocoa, terracotta and cloves. The palate follows with more cherries and spices balanced by fresh acidity and firm tannins. Although the wine has enjoyed almost 2 years of bottle aging, it can age a further 5 years.
Total Production: 585 bottles
Nebbiolo, originates from the North of Italy in the Piedmont region where the Barolo’s are celebrated amongst the finest wines in the world. Planted here in Paarl, it had a home in one of our Italian-style blends for many years (Goatfather) but never bottled as is. It was decided that the vineyard was to be uprooted on the back of the 2016 vintage and a final attempt was made at producing a wine good enough to be bottled on its own. Looking at the wine now, it seems we made a big mistake! Eerste en Laaste is the Afrikaans for “first and last”, which unfortunately is what we have in this superb Nebbiolo. A wine which carries the small-batch ethos of Bloemcool, we present to you for the very first and very last time, Bloemcool Eerste en Laste.
