The Perfect Pigeon Pair | Drie Papen Fontein White & Red Blend

In 2015, Charles Back and the Fairview team released the Drie Papen Fontein White blend. This white Bordeaux-style blend is primarily made of Sauvignon Blanc and Sémillon – a nod to the French region from which it takes its inspiration. Since inception, the Drie Papen Fontein has been celebrated, receiving many accolades, most notable of which include a 4.5 star Platter 2017 and a shining 90 Tim Atkin 2017 score.

Grazing Merino sheep

The story for the wines is carefully illustrated on the beautifully designed label, which features three medallions. The first is an image of a Merino sheep. The reason for this is due to the fact that the first grazing pastures for the woolly merino sheep were in the hilly slopes of Darling – an area admired for its lush lands. The central medallion is one of a lighthouse. But not just any lighthouse. This icon depicts the tiny, uninhabited Dassen Island that stands alone just off the West Coast of Darling, still active today, shining a protective light for passing ships in the nights. The final and third medallion is one that shows the mitre’s of three popes. The reason for this is due to the fact that there are three granitic mountain rocks which are silhouetted against the sky on the farm where the grapes used to make this wine are grown. These rocks are also what give the farm its name, so called ‘Drie Papen Fontein’ or ‘Three Popes Fountain’, when directly translated from Afrikaans.

Following the success of the first Drie Papen Fontein White Blend, Charles and the winemaking team have recently decided to release the pigeon pair to complement this Bordeaux-inspired showcase. The Drie Papen Fontein Red Blend is a Bordeaux-inspired wine made up using Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. Within its first month of release, it has already scooped up a 92 Winemag Rating, and we are confident this is just the beginning.

Together, the Drie Papen Fontein pair form part of the larger Regional Revival Range – a premium, food-orientated wine range that aims to highlight different wine regions and give them a Fairview Cape twist. With Darling one of the most exciting new South African wine regions to keep an eye on, we have no doubt this handsome couple will be making an entrance into your home any moment now.
