The inaugural Fairview La Capra festival was held on the 30th of October 2010, bringing together wine and food fans for a relaxed day of activities at the farm, getting to know Fairview a little better…
It was a crisp spring morning and there was definitely a ‘spring’ in the air as 160 runners and walkers prepared for a jaunt up the mountain. Cups of freshly brewed coffee and a quick egg and boerewors roll served as substantial sustenance for the trail awaiting. As the vuvuzela blew and the first hill was approached, many eager participants of the first La Capra Goat Run realised that this was no ordinary mountain race. 10 kms of scenic yet gruelling mountain track proved a challenge to be met. Well, not too challenging to the winner of the race, Michelle Dreyer, as she sped across the finish line just under an hour. She was closely followed by Jacobus Jansen, in a time of 1 hour 22 seconds. As the runners crossed the line, smiles confirmed that the course, albeit tough, was thoroughly enjoyed by all.
Meanwhile, the La Capra team was laying out a smorgasbord of eats and entertainment in the garden around the famous goat tower. The smell of freshly baked breads lured the festival guests into the market, but there was much more on offer. There was a wide selection of Fairview’s award winning cheese and even two new cheeses, specially developed for the event. There were also delicious olives and cold meats to fill the La Capra picnic boxes. The wine started flowing as the first band began to play, while the crowds were entertained by Jimmy Longlegs and his tall antics, Lady Asti and her tarot cards, the resident Fairview goats and some visiting camels and alpacas.
As the afternoon lingered on, the music and the festivities continued at a leisurely pace, as everyone sat around on the grass enjoying their picnics and the warm spring sun. Unfortunately the rugby result did dampen the spirits of a few festival goers, but all was soon forgiven, as the sun shone golden on the first La Capra festival!
